Alopecia Areata: an auto-immune disease that causes Hair Loss
Women and men are affected equally in Alopecia areata; a common autoimmune disease that results in the loss of hair from the scalp and elsewhere on the body. Experts do not know why the immune system attacks the follicles, but as we are aware when there is too much inflammation present in the body, the body can start attacking just about anything in your body, including, but not limited to your hair follicles.
The damage to the follicle is usually not permanent, and the onset usually starts with one or more small, round, non-scarring smooth patches. This type of auto-immune disease is usually more present in people younger than 20. However, any age group can be affected with Alopecia Areata.
