Bone broth: a healthy recipe for optimal health

Bone broth: from pre-historic drink to trendy beverage!

In fact, media outlets like Huffington Post and The New York Times are touting bone broth as the hottest health trend.

This delicious drink has gained even more popularity in recent years since the emergence of new diets like Paleo and Gap.

Bone broth is an ancient food touted for many health benefits

An ancient, traditional food; bone broth is touted for its health benefits.  Many trained chefs and Michelin Star restaurants even use it as a base for fine cuisines.  It’s extremely healthy, delicious, and turns many dishes into a real treat!

I’m not one to follow trends – I was drinking bone broth long before the hype.  In fact, it’s been part of my daily routine for almost eight years.

Bone broth was my ally when I was chronically ill and exhausted

I started drinking broth after becoming chronically ill and exhausted.  I was introduced to the Gaps diet*** by one of the many people I worked with during my search to recover from these health issues. To me, this bouillon was a medicine to heal my body.

Being introduced to bone broth really changed my life. I had a lot of collagen issues in my body and bone broth kept it under control somehow. I now consider it a food staple that I’ll continue to have for the rest of my life.

Recover gut and intestinal problems with bone broth

***The gaps diet, by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride, is a diet derived from the SCD diet. Dr Campbell-Mc Bride adjusted her protocol to fit the health care urgencies of each particular patient, whether they suffered from neurological or intestinal conditions. She worked to restore imbalanced bacterial ecosystem within the gastrointestinal tract.  I have read that this also helped many children with Autism.

Later down the line, I switched from the Gap diet to the Paleo diet.  I quit all dairy, soy and ghee products and I was already following a gluten-free diet.

Get strong with bone-broth healing superfood

Bone broth is one of those superfoods that you begin to appreciate with time.  You suddenly realise the powerful benefits for your body, beauty, and wellness. It’s extremely nutrient-dense and also an excellent way to soothe your stomach during the day when you experience a little hunger. It is also great when you suffer from low glycaemia as I often do. Bone broth is the perfect drink to get energised again.

It’s important not to confuse homemade bone broth with store-bought, boxed soups, which are often toxic.  They may contain gluten and are often full of bad salt, msg, and other preservatives you should not ingest.

Healthy bone broth: what our grandmothers and ancestors knew…

Before the industrial revolution and the invention of bouillon cubes, many families kept broth simmering on the stove all the time. This provided a natural base for soups and quick medicine when a family member was under the weather. In pre-industrial society, the preparation of the whole animal, including the use of bones for broth, was customary.

Our great-grandmothers would probably laugh at the idea that bone broth is a popular drink today since they’ve been using it for decades. They knew how easy, healthy, inexpensive and tasty broth was, and what a versatile source of nutrients it is. This nutrient dense liquid is rich in proteins, gelatine and contains trace amounts of minerals too.

There are so many different kinds of bone broth including fish, beef, chicken, lamb and more, which are the basis of many fine cuisines.  They have been staples of traditional diets in every culture.

Best way to make bone broth

The best way to eat fresh broth is by making it yourself from organic grass-fed beef, bison, lamb, beef feet (excellent for gelatine) or chicken. Other animal parts (that you can’t eat directly) may also be added. Bones with marrow, skin, feet, tendons and ligaments can simmer over a period of days.  The long-simmering process allows easier assimilation and digestion of protein-rich collagen, vital minerals, amino acids, glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate and other compounds. I simmer my broth on a very low fire, with lots of garlic and Himalayan salts, for approximately 48 hours.

Bones can usually be purchased at a low cost. Some butchers even offer it for free.

My secret to hair growth, firmer skin, nails and overall beauty

When you simmer bones, essential nutrients are released in a form that is easily absorbed by the body. Collagen gets hydrolysed into gelatine during the bone broth simmering process. Collagen is a key nutrient that the modern, Western diet severely lacks these days.

Your stomach lining needs to be somewhat permeable for nutrients to pass through.  Amino acids, glycine, gelatine, glutamine, are all great nutrients that strengthen the digestive system and gut lining.

Bad lifestyle choices, such as dealing with too much stress and an unhealthy diet, can lead to illnesses like a leaky gut, ulcers and other autoimmune illnesses.  Gelatine seals the gut.  Also, the more glycine you consume, the more optimally your liver will function too.

Collagen supplements contribute to a multi-billion-dollar industry.  However, the best way to get the purest, most bio-available form of collagen, chondroitin sulphate, hyaluronic acid and glucosamine into your body, is by drinking the homemade bone broth.  Bone broth also reduces inflammation, arthritis, and joint pain.

This superfood bone-broth supercharges bone and tooth health

Bone broth boosts bone and tooth health.  It contains essential minerals like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and potassium in their most bio-available forms.

It also detoxifies and supports a healthy gut and immune system and promotes healthy skin, hair and nails, and joint health and comfort.

I often get a bit hungry before I go to bed, so I will usually heat a cup of homemade bone broth. Not only is it nourishing, but it also heals you while you sleep and promotes deep, restful slumber.

Bone broth – Feel and look younger by raising your growth hormones naturally

Dr Kellyann’s best-selling book, “ The Bone Broth Diet”, states that bone broth is her secret weapon for fast, hunger-free weight loss. Besides cutting down on calories, Dr Kellyann says that mini-fasts optimise hormones because they cause insulin to drop and glucagon to rise. Insulin packs on fat and glucagon pull fat out of cells.

Little mini-fasts with bone-broth surge growth hormones

Mini-fasts make growth hormone levels surge.  Growth hormone burns fat, builds lean muscle, and sculpts the arms and legs.  You can raise growth hormone levels naturally with one or two mini-fasts per week.

Dr Kellyann says small fasts cleanse the body’s cellular matrix.  It removes toxins that cause your body to slow down and ramps up autophagy, which rids the body of old, tired cells that can’t burn energy efficiently.

I have a history of bulimia and anorexia, and I also have problems with hypoglycaemia. Therefore, I am a little bit hesitant to try fasting.  However, in the summer, I might give it a try.

Bone broth is a hearty, rich, complex drink that fills you up without making you fat and without adding extra pounds.

Celebrities like Shailene Woodley, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kobe Bryant are said to be hooked on a daily dose of bone broth.

Enjoy! xxx

Bone broth recipe

I’ve mentioned bone broth and its benefits SO many times in this book and this is the bone broth recipe that I always use.

You can use any bones you like, but I usually mix lambs heads, beef-feet and beef marrow bone. These provide me with an excellent source of collagen and gelatine to replenish my body of these important nutrients.

If you’re not a fan of meat you can find many recipes on the internet for chicken broth, fish, or any bones you like.

I remember, when I was first making beef-feet, I found it looked disgusting and my then-boyfriend back was always saying to me: “don’t you dare to serve any kind of meal that includes this!”

Bone broth recipe method:

Put your preferred bones in a pot (some people choose to slightly bake the bones first in the oven, but I don’t do this) and cover with filtered water.

Add a lot of garlic and Himalayan salt. I can’t say how much as it really depends on your taste, and how much you are making. I am a salty person, and I have learned that healthy salts are good to eat when you have chronic fatigue. It also healed my chronic urine problem, where I had to pee every 15 – 30 minutes, even at nights. That was awful.

Some ginger

You can add more herbs and vegetables to the broth, but I like to keep it simple and easy

Add some apple cider vinegar, and leave to soak for approx. one hour, without putting the stove on.

Put the stove on a medium heat and let the broth heat up until it starts boiling slowly. I let it boil for a couple of minutes and then turn the stove back to very low.

Leave to simmer for 24 to 48 hours.

Add purified water regularly so it doesn’t dry out

After 24 to 48 hours, filter out the bones and keep the bouillon in glass containers (never add warm broth in plastic containers, as you will be eating a lot of crap that way!)

In the refrigerator, you can keep broth for approx. one week, in the freezer much longer.

When the broth has cooled off, it should have the consistency of thick gelatine – that’s when you know that you’ve made a successful and healthy batch of pure gelatine and collagen.

Good luck and Bon Appetit!
