DIY Brown Sugar Body Scrub for cell turnover

Moisturise and enhance cell-turnover with this DIY Brown Sugar Body Scrub

Don’t let your skin suffer this winter – my DIY brown sugar scrub can help keep you moisturised and banish flaky, dry skin.

Not only is this sugar scrub completely natural, but it will also nourish your skin, feels luxurious, costs a fraction of what you would pay in-store and is super simple to make. In fact, I’m already on my third batch!

On top of that, you don’t have to go scouring through Amazon to find elaborate ingredients – this stuff can be easily sourced from your kitchen cupboard or the local supermarket.

The healing properties of cinnamon powder

The recipe I’ve given is very basic, but you can customise it if you wish. For instance, cinnamon could be swapped for another spice, like turmeric, which also has healing properties. The oil can also be swapped for olive or almond oil, depending on your skin type and condition. You could even add your favourite essential oil to the mix – just bear in mind the spice will have a strong scent and so your oils will need to compliment them.

The addition of organic cinnamon in this recipe isn’t purely for its delicious scent, there are also several skincare benefits of using cinnamon that can’t be ignored. In ancient times this special ingredient was used to cure illnesses and applied topically to heal the skin. It contains antiseptic, anti-ageing, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, making it ideal for our skin. It can also improve blood flow to the skin, helping to keep you hydrated and moisturised.

Organic papaya leave powder to help increase cell-turnover

You could also add dehydrated organic papaya leaves powder which helps increase cell-turnover, acts as a skin cleansing ageing and is effective against eczema. The papaya leaves are rich in enzymes like papain and chymopapain, which also aid digestion, prevents bloating, boosts immunity and other helps with digestive disorders. My favourite organic papaya leaf powder is the one of Naturevibe.

Storebought exfoliators are often pricey and full of chemicals

Most store-bought body-exfoliators are pricey and, when you consider the small amount sold in each tub, you’ve got yourself an expensive, recurring expense. By going the DIY route you will save so much more money and have the satisfaction that your body scrub is 100% chemical-free.

Show your love and gift a friend a self-made toxin-free product

You could also make a double batch and gift one to a friend or family member. This is a great, inexpensive idea that shows you care. Go all out with your gift by tying some ribbon around the jar, creating a label and printing out the recipe so that they can make more batches in the future. As the festive season approaches, I can’t think of anything better than gifting someone a moisturizing DIY brown sugar body scrub!

Ingredient Spotlight: Organic Brown Sugar

If you’re on the keto or paleo diet (or any healthy diet for that matter), you’ll know to avoid any type of refined sugar, even brown sugar. Although it might not be good for your health, brown sugar makes a great ingredient for DIY beauty recipes! There are so many great health benefits of using brown sugar topically, not to mention it smells incredible too!

Unlike salt, which can be abrasive, brown sugar has smaller particles making it gentle enough to exfoliate sensitive skin. It’s even safe enough to use (lightly) on your face. It’s also a lot safer and softer than other sugars.

Brown sugar also contains glycolic acid, which fights bacteria, supports cell turnover and helps prevent sun damage. It’s also a natural humectant, which means it can absorb moisture from the air and deposit it into your skin. It also locks in the moisture and keeps skin healthy and glowing.

I changed the way I eat in 2011 when I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue and adrenal fatigue, conditions where the thyroid is affected. I had no energy, was exhausted, desperate, and my weight had sky-rocketed.

Because of that, I decided to ditch sugars, processed foods, grains, dairy and toxic chemicals. And step-by-step, I introduced a whole-foods-based (first Paleo) and later an AIP (autoimmune protocol) friendly ketogenic approach to food which gave me my life, vitality, happiness and energy back!

Now, through my holistic wellness books and anti-ageing health platform, I want to empower people around the world do the same and regain their health, hair, life, vitality and beauty!
