Henna colour: ditch the chemical hair dyes!
Ditch the chemical hair dyes and discover the benefits of Henna Colour!
I used Henna Colour for almost two years now and decided to ditch the chemical hair dyes out of my life for good! It is the best decision I made for my hair.
I will continue to advocate and recommend Henna and herbal colourants to anyone I know.
What is Henna?
In case you didn’t know yet, Henna is native to the Arabian Peninsula, South Asia, parts of South East Asia, North Africa and the Horn of Africa and it has many haircare benefits. Henna, also known as Mehndi (or Lawsonia Inermis), is a flowering plant and the sole species of Lawsonia Genus.
Many Eastern cultures used Henna for thousands of years, and because of its anti-inflammatory, hypotensive, antiviral, antibacterial and astringent effects, among many others, its popularity is beginning to spread in the West now too.
An increasing number of people experience allergic reactions to the chemicals in hair dyes, which can lead to dry, brittle and dead hair, thinning, breakage and hair loss. But I want to enlighten you about the benefits of henna colour and make people aware of the dangers of chemical hair dye. You should ditch the chemical hair dyes from your life too. Besides, chemical hair dyes are dangerous and come with many side-effects detrimental to your health.

Did you know that henna colour is an ethical, sustainable, non-toxic, gluten-free, cruelty-free, paleo and raw dye for hair? For vibrant colour and lustrous shine, using Henna is a premium, natural and environmentally friendly alternative to chemical dyes.

Why you should ditch the chemical hair dyes and use Henna colour
The shocking truth about commercial toxic hair dyes and why you should use Henna colour instead
Traditional hair dyes are packed with potentially harmful chemicals, which, when exposed to high levels could lead to skin and respiratory irritation, a suppressed immune system, and even cancer.
Besides, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) found that over 5,000 different chemicals are found in hair dye products, some of which are reported to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing) in animals. As you dye your hair, you breathe in toxic fumes and chemicals which absorb into your body via your scalp.
The NCI also found that hairdressers and barbers are at an increased risk of bladder cancer, potentially because of the chemicals found in hair dye. Other studies have found the personal use of hair dyes could potentially increase the possibility of leukaemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but results are mixed.
Chemical hair dyes and chemical colouring affects our health.
Most likely—unless we’re hairdressers who deal with high exposures or we colour more frequently than usual—the effects will be negligible. But that doesn’t change the fact that these chemicals are seeping into our scalps (not forgetting the toll the creation and disposal of these chemicals take on the environment).
Recent studies have found a link between the use of hair dyes and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This condition is a painful, chronic illness that disfigures people and halts their physical abilities.
An extremely toxic chemical found in most hair dyes is para-phenylenediamine (don’t ask me to pronounce it!) This highly toxic chemical causes methemoglobinemia (can’t pronounce that either!) which restricts oxygen and causes the skin to turn a bluish/grey colour. Methemoglobinemia can be fatal and is a dangerous condition that should be addressed immediately if you suspect that you have it.
If you’re pregnant, avoid dyeing your hair. A growing foetus is vulnerable at any stage, so it’s not worth the risk. Everything that you consume whether orally or through the skin trickles down to your unborn baby. Chemicals can have a devastating effect on them. Leukaemia is just one condition linked to chemicals in hair dyes.
Ditch the chemical hair dyes, Cancer rates are on the rise! Simply use Henna Colour
This fact doesn’t surprise me, since nowadays we’re bombarded by chemicals in everyday products, including hair dyes. Why not replace your commercial hair dye for a natural, colouring alternative, like henna? This way you can avoid unnecessary exposure to toxic, cancer-causing chemicals.
From today, ditch your chemical dye and use the potent herbal plants and henna instead – these are a great and completely natural and effective way to dye your hair, and I swear by it! Not only do they tint your hair in beautiful, intense shades, but it also nourishes, protects, strengthens and adds shine and lustre to your hair. So, what’s stopping you?!
I ditched chemicals hair dyes from my life and switched to Henna Colour
After two decades of using chemical dyes, my hair was screaming for help.
Every time I left the hair salon, my scalp would feel itchy and inflamed, and it would be sore and burnt for days after.
At the same time, I was becoming dissatisfied with the artificial look from using these dyes. And the hair loss and hair breakage made me reconsider my colouring adventures too.
I had to think through my options. A very dear friend listened to my troubles and recommended henna as an alternative to colouring. I will be forever grateful to her for this tip, as it changed my life.
Henna colour is an effective alternative to chemical hair dyes
There have been some negative things written about henna – colour dramas, dry hair, etc. so I was a little cautious, and it took me a while to build up the courage to try it. What worried me most was that if things were to go wrong, I’d have to go back to artificial colouring, which I didn’t want to do. Tentatively I tried my first application of henna, and I’ve never looked back! It was one of the best things I ever did for my hair.
For me, the most difficult part of the switch from chemical dye to henna was the recommended six to an eight-week waiting period. This is a long time to wait, especially when you have some grey hair!
I waited just five weeks, and although everything was okay, I’d still recommend others to be cautious because you could have an entirely different reaction to me. Ultimately, I always recommend doing some research before switching to henna. And, just to be on the safe side, you can always do a skin-patch test to avoid adverse reactions.
And, if you decide to go back to chemical dye after applying henna, it’s recommended again to wait for another six to eight weeks as it can give unpredictable results.
Think about all the time you waste at the hair salon
Now you can dye your hair while you cook, meal-prep, read, chat with a friend or work on your laptop. It’s classic time-management – and no more inhaling of toxic chemicals while sitting in the salon!
Any change in lifestyle or life habits can be challenging. It might take a while for you to get used to a new hair care routine. It might be a bit difficult, in the beginning, finding the right shade for you. But that is the fun part!
When you find your colour, the results are amazing. Once you start using Henna, I don’t think you’ll ever want to go back to those harsh chemicals. Your hair will feel so much more alive, shiny and fabulous.
I wish I’d known about henna many years ago, but it’s never too late to change your life. I will continue to advocate henna, herbal colours and natural hair care solutions to everyone I know.

It’s important for me to increase awareness of the many toxic chemicals and their dangers that are used in beauty, hair and healthcare products these days. Global governments are not placing enough importance into this matter, and I find that worrying.
