Essential vitamins; how to pick the right hypoallergenic brand?
If, after following a clean eating and healthy living plan, your hair still lacks that lustre and shine it might be an indication that you need more essential vitamins. Ensuring that your hair and body are getting enough vitamins and minerals, as well as proper absorption, are key to having beautiful luscious hair and optimal health.
Essential vitamins: good and not-so-good toxic vitamins
Before we begin
Healthy eating is first and foremost; diet is always the priority to obtain your vitamins and minerals from. Supplementation is additional and should not be exaggerated.
Throughout my years of research, I’ve learnt that there are good vitamin supplements and not-so-good vitamin supplements. In fact, some of them can be downright toxic.
Ensure the vitamins don’t contain any allergens or sugars
Before picking a supplement, you need to consider the ingredients it contains and the possible side effects it could have. Some of them might contain allergens or toxic ingredients such as sugar, soy, gluten, dairy, and other preservatives or substances that we aren’t aware of. Therefore, it’s important to read the ingredients and understand if the brand is right for you. You could even email the company if you need any clarification or more information.
Not all brands have similar effects even if it’s the same ground compound
I also find that not all brands work for me. For example, I suffer side effects if I take melatonin from one brand, but with another brand, I’m completely fine! I also need to be careful when I take vitamin E supplements as some of them can contain gluten or soy, which I’ve cut out from my diet.
Switch brands if the vitamins have no effect
If you feel like the vitamins you’re taking aren’t working for you, I’d suggest switching the brand and checking what ingredients they contain. The more natural and bio-available, the better. And steer clear of any that contain allergens.
Don’t take too many vitamins
I’ve also learned that taking too many vitamins isn’t healthy for your body. I used to think that they could solve all my health problems. In fact, there was a time when my travelling bag looked more like the one of a junkie than of a young girl! These days I use vitamins to supplement my diet and take a limited amount.
It’s not only what you eat, it’s what you absorb
Why is it that you follow the healthiest, cleanest diet in the world and take the best vitamins, yet still feel unwell? That was what I asked myself a few years back when my health problems refused to resolve completely.
What I learnt was game-changing and a turning point in my health journey:
You can spend all the time and money you have on healthy, organic food and vitamins, but if you’re not absorbing enough of its nutrients, it’s pretty pointless. That’s why I always recommend readers to check that they have enough digestive enzymes and are producing enough stomach acid (HCL).
Take digestive enzymes and HCL with Pepsin
So please make sure to always take digestive enzymes together with your meals and health supplements to ensure the vitamins assimilate and absorb well. Digestive enzymes are the key to better digestion and nutrient absorption and with this approach, you supercharge your body with essential vitamins. I take digestive enzyme supplements and HCL with Pepsin every day.
Wellness physician Dr Axe adds that research shows:
Vitamins are a great ‘top up’ as they can fill any nutrient deficiency that you have. This, in turn, can help promote hair re-growth.
Take quality essential vitamins for optimal health and healthy hair
Keep your hair healthy by maintaining a good diet, limiting your toxic exposure, using toxic- free and organic beauty products, taking good quality essential vitamins, minerals, proteins, healthy fats and healthy carbohydrates.
Some of the most important hair vitamins include vitamin A, full Vitamin B-complex, C, Vitamin D, amino acids, beta-carotene, calcium, iodine, iron, magnesium, selenium, zinc, proteins, multi-minerals, trace minerals, probiotics, shilajit, maca, bone-broth and healthy fats. These vitamins are also perfect for improving your thyroid health, lowering inflammation and contributing to general health and well-being. Nutritional deficiencies are a major cause of hair loss.
A wholesome diet is the most important source of essential vitamins
The most important part of sourcing your body with essential vitamins is to eat a wholesome diet, and the best way to add more vitamins to your diet is by eating more organ meats, healthy fats, some seafood and plenty of healthy veggies! Make sure your body can also absorb them and if you are having difficulties with it like I do, you can introduce HCL with pepsin and digestive enzymes.
Finally, remember to always consult a doctor before trying out new vitamin supplements and agree on a safe dosage. It’s important to understand your body as certain vitamins can have the opposite effect and become very toxic if you take too much of them.
As always, moderation is key!
